A good pillow can either be the cause of your tossing and turning or the secret to a wonderful night's sleep. We therefore subjected more than 100 pillows to the ultimate sleep test, recording over 500 nights of actual use and professional lab assessments.

Having spent ten years evaluating sleep products, my best advice is to begin with your sleep posture. For neck support, side sleepers typically require strong, high-loft pillows. Stomach sleepers should choose low-profile, soft choices. Sleepers on their backs? Often, something in between works best. • Foam held up under pressure in our tests
  • Fits a wide range of body heights

Cons:

  • Not ideal for sleepers who change position

If you're a dedicated side sleeper battling to keep your head, neck, and spine aligned, this oddly designed pillow could be the solution. Recommended for those between 5'3" and 6'4", it was meant to close the gap between your neck and shoulder without sloping like a conventional pillow. Like a cooler sleep? Consider the Ice Cube variant, which has a cool-to-the-touch cover.

Performance: During pressure tests, the memory foam fast recovered and maintained its shape well overnight. Though it fits into a regular pillowcase, it can stand out somewhat. The company also produces a thin, flexible pillowcase that exactly matches the form.

Cons:

  • Grey pattern may be visible under pillowcases

Fill: Adjustable blend of memory foam clusters and kapok fibers

Outer Cover: Polyester/viscose blend

Sizes: Queen, King

Perfect for mixed sleepers or anyone who desires gentle support without compromising alignment, this pillow is notable for its opulent feel and tailored comfort. The fill is made of kapok fibers—a silky, cotton-like natural material—for plushness and shredded memory foam for structure. For back and stomach sleepers who want a low-profile pillow to prevent neck strain, this is particularly wonderful.

Performance: Although it has a soft, velvety feel, it showed remarkable durability in our pressure tests as it fast restored to form. Under thin white pillowcases, the patterned outer cover may be somewhat seen.

  • Comfortable in multiple sleep positions, per testers
  • Easily bounces back to shape

  • Pillowcases fit slightly loose

Fill: Solid memory foam

Outer Cover: Polyester

Firmness: Medium

Sizes: Standard

With a reduced profile, Tuft & Needle's solid foam pillow provides a supportive, responsive feel—ideal for back sleepers or side sleepers with smaller frames. Unlike shredded foam pillows, this one employs a single piece of foam with built-in air holes and cooling elements like graphite and gel to assist lower heat accumulation.

Performance: In Lab pressure tests, it stood out with its rapid rebound—springing back to shape as soon as the weight was withdrawn. Though a little smaller than usual pillows, it nevertheless fit nicely in conventional pillowcases.

Durability: Though only the outside cover is washable, it performed well in our tests without any shrinking. Just remember it has to be air-dried since it's not dryer-safe.

Selecting the Appropriate Pillow for You

Given the variety of pillows available, it makes sense to begin by emphasizing the fill. The fill influences price, durability, support, and comfort as well as how the cushion feels. To assist you choose, below is a straightforward breakdown of the most often used pillow fills:

  • Down pillows provide a rich sensation since they are extremely soft and ultra-fluffy. Usually more affordable and firmer is a combination of down and feathers.
  • Made from synthetic fibers, these pillows at a more reasonable cost approximate the sensation of actual down. Often hypoallergenic, they are soft and supportive.
  • Usually larger and more solid, memory foam pillows are known for their contouring and support. Select shredded foam for a softer, moldable sensation or solid foam for structural support.
  • Bouncier and less contoured than memory foam, latex pillows provide continuous support. Often made from natural rubber, they are a wonderful environmentally aware option.
  • These pillows combine foam with soft materials like microfiber or kapok to provide you the best of both worlds: strong support with a soft, comfortable surface.
