[Recipes] Baked Plantain Chips – A Crunchy, Low Sugar Snack Everyone Will Love

Hands-On Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

For the Chips:

  • 2 green plantains, rinsed, peeled, and sliced on the bias into 1/8"-thick ovals
  • 2 Tbsp. neutral oil (such as canola, sunflower, or peanut)
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

For the Optional Seasoning Blend:

  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cayenne
  • 1/4 tsp. smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. MSG (optional)

Instructions

Step 1:

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, toss the sliced plantains with oil and salt until evenly coated.

Step 2:

Arrange plantains in a single layer on two large baking sheets, making sure they don’t overlap.

Step 3:

Bake for 20 minutes, or until chips are golden and crispy. Remove the golden ones and return any thicker slices to the oven for 3 to 5 more minutes until crisp.

Step 4 (Optional):

To add extra flavor, stir together all seasoning blend ingredients in a large bowl. Add the baked chips and toss until evenly coated.

TIPS
  • For best results: Use green plantains — they’re less sweet and bake up crispier.
  • No mandoline? A sharp knife works just fine. Just try to slice evenly.
  • Serving suggestions: Pair with guacamole or a creamy dip for an addictive snack.
